Garage Door Spring Repair

Garage doors have two main varieties of springs. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of your garage. They get their power by extending. Torsion springs run along a bar you can observe above your garage door when it is closed. Torsion springs obtain their force from twisting.

In most cases if one of your springs is broken it may be entirely impossible to open your garage door. The exception is if you have a single door and it is made of a light metal. In any case it is best not to attempt to open your door yourself. It can lead to injuries.

Torsion springs are difficult to replace. If you have had no specific hands on instruction on how to replace your tension spring, do not even think about it. Not only that, but torsion springs are hard to locate at local stores. Extension springs may be changed by an enterprising do it yourself homeowner. A limited supply of extension springs can be found at hardware or home improvement stores.

There are some repairs you could make in your garage door. One of many options of a garage door opener is that it has stop reverse lights that will stop your garage door from closing if one thing is obstructing its path.

If your garage door starts going down, then stops and goes back up, accompanied by your garage door opener's lights blinking, you have a problem you on which you can work

Occassionally your garage door's "eyes" may get bumped in such a way that they are no longer pointing to each other. If that is the case, cautiously adjust the beams. Do not knock them with a hammer. There are adjusting brackets attached to the tracks that ought to be adjusted with a screw driver.

If adjusting the beams does not handle your problem, carefully look around the opening of your garage door. Whatever can be blocking the door's path may not be entirely obvious. Look carefully.

If you've spent quite a period searching for the item that is blocking your garage door and nothing seems to work, try cleaning the lenses of your stop/reverse lights with a paper towel. Perhaps a bug or smear has gotten on the lense.

If cleaning the lenses does not make your problem go away, the responsibility may lie with your garage door opener. You might have a bad sprocket or bad logic board.

If your opener is the issue you may be glad to know that you probably don't have to replace it. Components are available to garage door technicians who will repair your opener at a fraction of the price of a new opener.
